Nor’west adds to NC fire risk By ROBYN BRISTOW A header, a hay barn and a roadside shelter belt are the latest victims of fire in North Canterbury as conditions become tinder dry. A brisk nor’west wind has had brigades on tenterhooks across the region and volunteers have had little sleep with fires at Mandeville, Burnt Hill, near Oxford, at the back of Rotherham and Domett.

A hay barn burnt to the ground at Domett on Sunday night with volunteer firemen on site for five hours preventing it from spreading and dampening down hot spots to ensure it did not flare up again. A fire near Rotherham on Monday kept nine units busy with the wind playing havoc and fanning the fire into life again requiring a helicopter, which had earlier been turned away, to be recalled to help put it out.

Hurunui principal rural fire officer Allan Grigg says the fires are a reminder to everyone to ensure that when using any machinery, mowers or motorbikes to stay away from dry vegetation and have water or a fire extinguisher on hand and to fit spark suppressants to motorbikes. He is also urging farmers with electric fences to turn down the voltage if possible to around 3000 volts.

‘‘Anything over 3000 creates the potential for arcs and sparks. Two or three fires in the district have been ignited by electric fences in the past couple of weeks,’’ says Mr Grigg. Meanwhile in the Waimakariri district a header was burnt out near Mandeville late Monday afternoon. The resulting fire burnt through almost two hectares of rank grass, coming close to a couple of homes and causing stress to livestock on

The preliminary works are taking place to take advantage of the good summer weather and to allow the main works to start without undue delay once resource consents have been granted. New HS needed? Local educators are asking if a high school in Amberley could be a solution to Rangiora High School’s bulging school roll. Rangiora High School principal Peggy Burrows says the school’s roll of around 1800 students is already big enough for a town the size of Rangiora. There are already 408 year 9 students enrolled for this year and the school has ‘‘good retention rates in senior students’’. However, Ministry of Education projections suggest the school roll could grow to 2500 over the next two decades, which Mrs Burrows says is too big. She suggests either a second high school is needed in Rangiora or a new high school could be built in Amberley for up to 800 students. ‘‘We don’t see it as healthy to go above 1800 and Amberley is a growing area. ‘‘I live in Balcairn and I shop at the new Amberley supermarket. If I was a parent it would be easier to send my kids to Amberley.’’ Rangiora High School was the South Island’s third largest school at the start of last year, with Burnside High School in Christchurch the largest with 2500 students. Mrs Burrows believes if a school gets too big it create problems, with students getting lost in the system and pastoral care can become more challenging. However, there is some flexibility in having 1800 students, as the school can provide some single sex classes. ‘‘We keep shrinking our zone, but what more can we do. The Ministry of Education doesn’t seem to be listening. They say they’ve got no plans to add to the network for secondary education in North Canterbury, but they do for primary.’’ Hurunui Mayor Winton Dalley says he met with Ministry of Education officials

last year, who informed him that Amberley did not have the population to justify a high school and there was sufficient provision in Rangiora and Kaiapoi High Schools and Hurunui College. ‘‘We had a responsibility to make sure we made provision. There is growth, but it’s not on the same scale as Waimakariri ­ but times can change quickly.’’ Amberley School principal Kevin O’Halloran says there are a number of possibilities for Amberley, which could take some of the pressure off Rangiora High School, including establishing a middle school for year 7­10 students, a district high school for year 7­13 students or Amberley School becoming an area school for year 1­13 students. ‘‘I believe there’s some real merit particularly with the growth in Rangiora. It’s a big step to go to a school of 1800 students. We do get parents and year 8 students who come to me because they are worried about it. ‘‘I would also be concerned about what sort of pastoral care would be provided in a school of 2500 students.’’ Amberley School’s roll is around 260 students. Last year there were 38 year 8 students, with most going to Rangiora High School this year. Leithfield School’s new principal Sharon Marsh says she would support the idea of a high school in Amberley, as she is ‘‘a great fan of students being educating in a community they live in’’. She says it is important to have wide discussion so ‘‘we are not just responding to a need now, but we are looking at what the opportunity can provide for us in the future’’. Woodend, Pegasus and Ravenswood area could also be options with the population projected to grow to between 10,000 and 13,000 over the next decade.

Surfcasting for a fish and a prize By AMANDA BOWES Each year, a friend and I make an annual pilgrimage to the Amberley Beach Surfcasting competition, in a never ending quest to catch the big one and bag one of the tantalising prizes on offer. Sometimes we go alone, other times we are joined by locals who fancy a day out getting roasted on the beach. After years of attending the event, we have packing down to a fine art and take supplies that will cover our needs for far longer than just one day, or for an unlikely emergency (not just confined to embedded fish hooks, sandflies, cuts or jelly fish stings). This year, my husband wasn’t working and another local keen fisherman wanted to join us so he could tick it off his bucket list. He had kindly gone out the night before and braved a creek deep in the Weka Pass to bag us an eel for bait. Having tried squid, shellfish, crayfish and manufactured bait such as ‘‘Squid Vicious’’ and ‘‘Gulp’’ my contribution was meat from an over fat ewe that had been in the freezer for a couple years. Most years we leave a bit late and by the time we find a car park the only ones left require then walking for what seems an interminable distance with all our gear. This year, we were determined to get there early and find a good spot to park and fish. Leaving Waikari at 6.30am, we were registered by just after 7am and ready to find the perfect spot. For once we hit the jackpot and got a park that was only a few metres from where we would set up camp for the day. The next half hour was spent getting rods ready for the starting whistle and discussing hook size, bait and the rules of the competition. There was a light Nor­wester blowing and it was shaping up to be a scorcher.

While we always dream of catching the big one, usually all we catch is seaweed or a snag so a few trips to a fishing store had us armed with all sorts of paraphernalia "guaranteed to catch fish." When you are only 5’4" wielding a 12 foot surfcasting rod can be quite a challenge, the biggest of which is casting out far enough. With two burly men on tap this year to throw out the lines on occasion (well, quite a few occasions actually) it certainly helped the shoulder not becoming catatonic from constant casting! Next to us, a young fella had only been fishing a short time when he pulled in his first catch of the day ­ a nice healthy Kawhai. Somewhat encouraged by this auspicious start, we thought we might be in with a chance.

Not long after casting out, I pulled in a magnificent paddle crab, which was duly admired by those fishing either side. When the measuring man turned up on his quad, I held out the crab as though it was the Holy Grail from the sea. It measured a respectable 11cm across the back and with that done, I returned my catch to the ocean. The youngster next to us continued to pull in fish after fish, more Kawhai, Yellow Eyed Mullets and of course paddle crabs. Our bait was being taken as fast as it could go out and there was high expectations all round. The day grew hotter and hotter, with the wind whipping up and dying down. The umbrella we had came to grief after a strong gust, so eventually the sea

was the only place to find relief. Like all good fishing expeditions we all had the one that got away ­ witnessed by others, so not just a fishy story! The old ewe meat began rendering itself down in the extreme heat and seemed to be a real hit with what ever was lurking in the waves. A lone dolphin cruised up and down the line of breakers, perhaps chasing the mullet, and seabirds were aplenty looking for scraps. By early afternoon, the heat was getting too much, so I sat down on the wet sand with my fishing rod and let the breakers swirl around, cooling off overheated skin. It was a reasonably popular past time as more and more people got into the sea to cool down, carefully avoiding the many fishing lines. Well, we didn’t catch the big one, but at the prize giving, we were lucky enough to win a spot prize, which was a famous first. The young fella beside us won four fishing rods as his fish were all the longest measured in the junior section. Every other junior received a Leatherman so nobody went home empty handed. In the senior section, a huge skate measuring over two metres took out the top prize for G Pownsonby, while the rest of the fish measured were cod and Kawhai, with only one dogfish. Driving home, I couldn’t help but think how lucky we are to live in a place where rivers, mountains and lakes are on one door step, while the sea is only half an hour in the other direction. The competition is one of those summer Kiwi experiences that brings people together to collectively enjoy the challenges of catching a fish, get outrageously over exposed to the sun, salt and surf and maybe go home with a prize. Long may the Amberley Lions Club which organises the event keep doing so and keep the yearly tradition alive.

Rangiora businesses in positive mood By DAVID HILL Rangiora businesses are feeling more positive as the High Street recovery becomes more visible. Business owners and staff spoken to by The News say the future is looking more certain and they continue to be well­ supported by a loyal customer base. Over the last few years several buildings including Farmers, Robbies, the Lambert, Pulley and Conway buildings have been demolished due to earthquake damage and legislation. However, local business owners and staff say things are looking up, with building work progressing on the former Conway and Lambert sites (172­188 High Street) and the former Rangiora Saddlery building site (214­216 High Street). Several businesses have been occupying container shops on the Waimakariri District Council lawn for the last two years, but are now looking forward to a fresh start. F­Stop Rangiora Photo Lab is all set to move into The News’ former High Street shop on Monday, February 2, while other businesses are looking forward to moving into the brand new Conway building, which is under construction. Challenges can arise Fluctuations normal A summer such as we have had so far, reminds me of just what a great place it is that we live. People often say to me there is so much opportunity to be had for those that actively seek it. For the most part, I agree, however we should not forget those that through no fault of their own, are not equipped to embrace all that our electorate has to offer. For some families, achieving the basics in life can be a challenge. The recent story, in the north of the electorate, of a mother and her plight to find suitable housing for her son with cerebral palsy brought this home to me. Albeit at the last hurdle, a home has been found and everything is being done to accommodate the family. In this situation, I contacted Housing New Zealand, the Ministry of Social Development and the Minister’s office to help find a resolution. It seems timely to remind readers that, as their local Member of Parliament, I am here to help them and will do what I can, when I can, to assist. I want this electorate to be a place that people from all walks of life can enjoy without the burden of unnecessary difficulties.

In Hurunui, a district with a predominantly primary land based and visitor industry economy, fluctuating fortunes are normal, influenced by many factors outside our control. Seasonal weather variations, inevitable storm and weather events, national and international market product prices, financial and trading influences, all conspire to make life unpredictable and challenging in a district like ours. We certainly experienced all these in 2014 and a typical Canterbury dry spell is now extending into 2015. As we contemplate the challenges and opportunities in 2015, additional to the above constant challenges, we are increasingly challenged by the wider community’s demands, via government policies, for higher environmental standards. While most of us agree with the need to protect our environment, the challenge is, how do we accomplish that without destroying our small rural communities, people’s livelihoods, and still maintain the New Zealand economy, let alone contribute to government targets of 50 percent increased agricultural productivity by 2025. The challenge of meeting higher environmental standards impacts both on our small urban communities and the rural productive sector.

Funding infrastructure upgrades to meet tougher sewer discharge regulations is daunting, as is meeting New Zealand Drinking Water standards. Proposed changes in the way we fund these utilities in the future will be an important issue for the community this year. Meeting environmental standards in our waterways is causing tension between sections of our farming community and is a major challenge ahead. These issues can only be resolved for mutual benefit if all parties remain engaged in open and trusting dialogue. Adding to the mix we have yet to agree on a way forward to meet another National requirement, the protection of Biodiversity, as we review our District Plan. While our 2015 challenges appear daunting, confronting them and finding solutions will be rewarding and ensure the ongoing success and prosperity of our great district. Working with next years Youth Council, an outstanding group of young people, encouraging them to extend their leadership skills and get involved in their community’s challenging issues is an exciting prospect. Leaving our district in good heart and our youth well prepared for a challenging and changing world is the legacy we want to leave.

Young man to lead memorial ride When 15 year old Fletcher Earl discovered he was too young to ride in the 100 year 100 horse ride planned for Anzac day in Waikari, he was highly disappointed. He had hoped to ride alongside his mother and sister in remembrance of his great great uncle, John Robert Patterson, who left Canterbury to fight at Gallipoli. But his disappointment soon turned to joy, when he was offered a part in one of the several short films being produced by Terry King, remembering the Canterbury Mounted Riflemen, who took their horses overseas to fight in the First World War. ‘‘I have always been really interested in the history of World War One and so it has been really cool doing the film,’’says Fletcher.

It was a lot of work, but Fletcher says he enjoyed every minute of it. One lot of filming took place on Woodend beach, at sunrise, where they were depicting fighting in the desert, while another day of filming was spent at Terry’s place. While Fletcher used his own horse for the filming at Terry’s, a horse was supplied for the desert re­enactment. Fletcher’s family have four horses on their Pyramid Valley property and Fletcher says although he enjoys riding every now and again, he is ‘‘too lazy’’ to ride very often. ‘‘I was told that as my riding wasn’t totally flash, I had to get better to be in the films, so I practiced really hard.’’ Stanley, one of the Earl’s horses, took to filming like a duck to water and wasn’t phased by the strange goings on such as the stunt horses having to lie down and

play dead. Fletcher’s mum, Sharon and his older sister, Alex, are getting their two horses into shape for the ride, which will leave The Peaks Hall after a dawn service for Waikari and a service on the Village Green. Sharon says they are doing a lot of road work with the horses and getting them used to strange sights and sounds, so when the event rolls around, the horses won’t be bothered by anything. While Fletcher isn’t allowed to ride in the 100 horse procession, he has been bestowed with the honour of leading the cavalry into Waikari on foot, with his riderless horse carrying a pair of boots facing backwards, in deference to the fallen cavalrymen and their brave horses. ‘‘I am so lucky to be able to take part in the event and the filming, it has just been totally awesome,’’ says Fletcher.

Lunches catering for allergies School lunch boxes which cater for kids with food allergies can often be difficult. But two mums have come up with an easy way to help out. They have established a blog ­ www.littlebare.net ­ complete with recipes to help out not only with lunches but also with breakfast and dinner and for treats. Lonnie Pomeroy of Nelson and Brydie Morrison of Amberley publish simple and nourishing recipes for children that are all free of gluten, dairy, refined sugar and other allergens on their website. End of era for school By SHELLEY TOPP When pupils at Rangiora Borough School in King Street return from their summer holidays on Tuesday, February 3, they will notice something big is missing. In their absence the J1­J6 classroom block has been demolished. The work is stage three of the school’s extensive property upgrade in preparation for stage four, the construction of a new building with 12 classrooms. The development is part of the Government’s $22 million upgrade of four North Canterbury schools, including Rangiora Borough, Oxford Area, Ashgrove and Southbrook, alongside a $14.9 million development project at Rangiora High School. Of the $22 million, Rangiora Borough has been allocated $7m. The upgrades are being made to accommodate the population growth in North Canterbury since the Christchurch earthquakes during 2010 and 2011. Helen Hirst, of Rangiora, who attended the school during the 1930s said she was shocked to see the building being demolished last week. ‘‘I thought, there is another part of my

life that has been bulldozed away,’’ she said. Back then, during Helen’s time at the school, classrooms in the building, which was built in 1925, had been converted to open­air classrooms. It was the new thing to enable more sunshine and light into classrooms, which was seen as a healthy option for children. ‘‘They were really quite a feature,’’ Helen said. ‘‘They had doors facing north that could slide right open and let the air through. Previously classrooms had high­ pitched windows and were much more enclosed,’’ she said. Rangiora Borough School principal Alan Sutton said the old six­classroom block was being replaced with 12 classrooms. Completion was projected for September or October this year. ‘‘It will be a modern learning environment, much like what they have at Pegasus,’’ he said. The school was built in 1873. The sliding doors in the open­air classrooms, which Helen remembers, had been replaced by aluminium­framed windows at some point, Alan said, but he was unsure when.

Ducks to help fill coffers Model T tour

Garaging facilities at the Culverden St John Ambulance are to be upgraded. And bright yellow plastic ducks will be a big part of the fundraising campaign to help pay for the building. An adjoining section has been bought by the Amuri St John area committee for the new garage and a Duck Race down the Pahau Stream is aimed at boosting fundraising efforts. The local Lions Clubs of Amuri, Hanmer Springs and Hawarden­ Waikari have joined forces to help with the project and people will soon be asked to part with some of their cash to buy one of over 1000 plastic ducks as entry into the race. Englefield Baths and Showers has helped out by donating the ducks for the Easter Sunday event. A previous Duck Race helped raise $20,000 to help pay for an ambulance. The Culverden ambulance station serves the largest area in the South Island, responding to calls from as far north as Maruia Springs, south to Frog Rock and east half way along the Inland and Leader Roads. It also covers the Cheviot and Amberley regions when they are not able to provide a crew. The area committee of the Amuri St John Ambulance service says the huge contribution volunteer operational colleagues make enables a continuous manned service for the region. It requires 23 volunteers to crew Culverden during the week

Model Ts will line up in Rangiora next Thursday to take a jaunt to the West Coast. The seven day coast­to­ coast ‘‘West is Best’’ 2015 National rally is being run by the Model T Ford Club of New Zealand. Entrants will depart from the Ivory Street Countdown carpark on January 29 and head to Murchison for the first stop over of the journey. The following day the tour winds its way across country to Lake Rotoroa and through the Buller Gorge to sunny

Westport. From there the tour meanders its way to Karamea and the following day, February 1, takes a trip north to gaze on the Heaphy Track before the tour winds its way back to Westport. Greymouth is the destination the following day before participants head over the Alps the next day to Hanmer Springs for a soak in the hot pools after visiting historic places on ‘‘out of the way’’ roads. It’s back to Rangiora and the final dinner on February 4.

Often the station has to provide two ambulances. Every week day Culverden 1 is crewed by a paid officer and a volunteer and at night and the weekend the crew is all voluntary. When it is called out a second vehicle is crewed and personnel are ready to come into the station from home. This means that some volunteers may be doing two or three rostered 12

hour shifts and they can also be doing a ‘‘second call’’ duty during a week. Culverden ambulances responded to 50 jobs in November, 10 of which were outside its area ­ Cheviot, Waipara, Omihi, Pegasus, Amberley and Sefton ­ and in December it responded to 52 callouts, nine of which were outside the area. The second truck was used on four occasions. January looks likely to continue the upward trend with 41 jobs dealt with up until January 16.

The new Ashley River bridge is on track to open in March. Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers says the council is hoping to discuss plans in the coming weeks for the official opening of the bridge on Cones Road, near Rangiora, which is expected to be in mid­March. Mr Ayers says the bridge may initially be opened to north­bound traffic only, with the old bridge used for south­bound traffic, while finishing touches are made. Work began on the $10.6 million reinforced concrete

bridge in February last year, after the contract was awarded to Concrete Structures Limited. The bridge will have cycle lanes on both sides and a footpath on the downstream side. Before it opens Mr Ayers will open the Rangiora Town Hall on February 28, while a special guest will open the Oxford Town Hall on February 21. ‘‘I’ve worked hard on it (the Rangiora Town Hall) for 30 years, so I’m not giving up that honour to anyone,’’ he jokes.

Reusable coffee cups aid clogged landfills By SHELLEY TOPP The next time you dash into a cafe ´ for a takeaway coffee, tea or hot chocolate, spare a thought for our bulging landfills because single­use takeaway cups are no longer recyclable. But in North Canterbury, some cafe ´s have already clicked on to the idea of reusable coffee cups to help reduce the amount of rubbish headed to landfill. Sophie Wang, co­owner of the Good Street Deli in Rangiora, says they began selling reusable cups to provide customers with an environmentally­ friendly alternative to the single­use cups. Their brightly­coloured range of New Zealand­made Underground Coffee Company reusable cups are proving popular with customers. At Amberley’s Little Vintage Espresso Cafe, many customers bring their own reusable takeaway cups, and have done so since the cafe opened in April 2013, says co­owner Vanessa Hanna. Katie Nimmo, Sustainability Projects Facilitator at the University of Canterbury Sustainability Office says the end­point recycler in China will no longer accept recyclable cups due to takeaway cups contaminating more valuable recyclable paper and cardboard with the remnant traces of leftover coffee, hot chocolate and tea.

‘‘There are also problems with recycling the coating on the inside of the cups. Recycling from New Zealand is regularly audited and in some cases recycling with high levels of contamination are refused at the border and sent right back to New Zealand ­ at our cost. These shipments then have to be dumped in the landfill at yet another cost.’’ Katie Nimmo says the biggest positive impact we can have on this problem is to stop using single­use takeaway cups altogether. As an alternative, she recommends sitting down with friends and enjoying a leisurely coffee served in a china cup, or buying a reusable takeaway cup. Dr Sharon McIver of Our Daily Waste, a Christchurch recycling and waste prevention consultancy, says the single­ use takeaway cups look like mini rubbish bins and because of this people stuff them with apple cores, cigarette butts, pie wrappers etc. ‘‘So that when they get thrown in the recycling bin they’re already full of contaminants. Also, it’s amazing the damage half a left over latte or hot chocolate can do to a bin full of clean recycling,’’ she says. Although single­use takeaway cups ‘‘only became popular in New Zealand in the last 20 years they are now one of our biggest waste items.’’

Boating workshop Boating is a favourite kiwi pastime, but all too often a pleasant day out on the water turns to disaster. Amberley resident, Rear­Admiral Peter McHaffie, is passionate about prevention of boating accidents through education. Mr McHaffie, a former chief of the Royal New Zealand Navy, has also cruised and lived onboard recreational powerboats and admits to a few mishaps of his own making. ‘‘What boaties doesn’t have cautionary tales to tell? There is nothing so unpredictable as the sea,’’ he says. Mr McHaffie will share his expertise about boats and navigation through TimeBank Hurunui’s Learning Exchange programme on Thursdays, January 29, from 6pm to 7.30pm at the

Amberley Library’s RSA room. ‘‘Keeping your Boat Shipshape and Your Crew Safe’’ is for novice and more experienced mariners. Topics will cover assessing marine weather and waterway environments, using communication and safety equipment, reading charts, position finding, anchoring and mooring, avoiding collisions, nautical protocols and the importance of briefing crews. Mr McHaffie will also advise about the services, publications and courses available to boat­owners or anyone who intends to go cruising. The workshop is open to all. Thrills and spills aplenty at Canterbury rodeo By ROBYN BRISTOW ‘‘Give that cowboy a round of applause,’’ was the familiar catch cry of Craig ‘‘Wiggy’’ Wiggins, the effervescent compere at last Saturday’s Canterbury Rodeo. On a hot, dusty day, more than 4000 rodeo enthusiasts packed into the Canterbury Rodeo Arena at the Mandeville Sports Complex in North Canterbury. They came for the thrills and spills, and there were plenty of them. They cheered and clapped at the cowgirls who rode their horses around barrels at break­ neck speed, the cowboys who climbed up on to wild horses harnessed to buck like crazy, and the bulls, like Dougal, in his last year of service, ‘‘ who were bred to buck cowboys off’’. But they saved a special cheer for Libby Bent, the trail­blazing 18­year­old from Tai Tapu, who is New Zealand’s only female bull rider. She competed in the second division barrel racing event earlier in the day, then stepped up into the big league riding in the open grade bull ride event for the first time, having competed in the lower ranks in previous competitions. Women are not permitted to compete in ‘‘rough­stock’’ rodeo events, including bull riding, in New Zealand, but Libby has special dispensation from the New Zealand Cowboys’ Association to do so. She was also in the limelight last year, riding a bull in a controversial advertisement for New Zealand women’s fashion retailer Glassons. With so many competitors

biting the dust during the rodeo on Saturday, the opportunity for serious injuries to humans and animals in this fast­paced, high­ risk sport seemed endless. It looked nasty when a steer rolled on Christchurch cowboy Scott Glassey, during the steer wrestling event. He walked uncomfortably from the ring, his face covered in blood. However, he was quickly examined by the St John Ambulance medics who said his injuries were not serious. Scott, whose daughters, Grace aged 11, and Meg, aged 9, competed in the junior barrel racing event earlier in the day, won the steer wrestling event and was back on his horse a short time after being injured. The St John Ambulance team said there were no serious injuries and the rodeo’s marketing spokeswoman, Yvonne Bresser, said no animals had been injured either.

Kaiapoi marks recovery milestone By DAVID HILL Kaiapoi took a major step towards earthquake recovery with the opening of the town’s brand new civic centre on Saturday. The Ruataniwha Kaiapoi Civic Centre was officially opened on Saturday morning, with the new library immediately opened for service. Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers told the assembled crowd that it was ‘‘a great day for Kaiapoi and the Waimakariri district and it’s also a good day for Canterbury’’. ‘‘It marks a day of moving forward from the devastating earthquakes. It’s all part of our province’s recovery. ‘‘Kaiapoi is one of two main towns in our district and it’s important for the whole district that Kaiapoi is doing well.’’ The new civic centre building houses the Kaiapoi library, service centre and an art space. The Kaiapoi Museum is also moving in, but is not expected to open until April. The project cost $13.8 million and was completed on time, within budget. Mr Ayers was joined by chief executive Jim Palmer, Kaiapoi Community Board chairwoman Robyn Wallace and Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey as speakers for the opening. Each speech was followed by a waiata sung by a choir featuring council staff and Cr Kirstyn Barnett. Fellow Mayors Winton Dalley (Hurunui) and Kelvin Coe (Selwyn) were also in attendance to show their solidarity. Mrs Wallace said it had been a long journey since the September

Mrs Burrows says the building project is huge, with the equivalent of 26 teaching spaces and seven science labs, about one­ third of the school, being replaced by modern learning environment style classrooms. Murals bring library to life Leaders needed By DAVID HILL Storytelling art is featuring in the first exhibition in Kaiapoi’s new artspace. The work of Christchurch artist Mary Kelleher is on display in the new artspace in the Ruataniwha Kaiapoi Civic Centre and Library, featuring ‘‘The Mill is Kaiapoi’’, which was launched on Waitangi Day last year. Co­ordinator Jackie Watson says the new artspace provides an opportunity to promote local art, to educate the public, to display the work of New Zealand artists and ‘‘it’s really open to anyone.’’ Mary, who spent the first four years of her life in Amberley, says she likes to tell a story with her art, which is known as ‘‘Handmade Histories’’. She uses old blankets and curtains to create a story mural and each of her works has an accompanying book and song. ‘‘It’s my passion. These are not just artworks to just be revered from a distance, it’s about storytelling and arousing curiosity to learn about their history and to provide a link between generations. ‘‘There might be three generations come to an exhibition and the different props accompanying my work can spark a conversation by triggering a memory.’’ During the exhibition Mary will be working on a new heritage story mural ‘‘The Little Shop That Grew’’, as well as holding workshops to share her skills and she hopes that local schools will come and visit. Her other works include: ‘‘The Story of a New Zealand Truck Driver’’ which recounts stories her father told her about Midnight Williams, a truck driver at Banks Peninsula. The song is sung to the tune of ‘‘Baa Baa Black Sleep’’. ‘‘The Mouse in the Mill’’ tells the story of how fleece is made into yarn, with the song being sung to the tune of ‘‘Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush’’. In ‘‘Knit One, Purl One’’ she ‘‘wanted to show how a photo brings back all sorts of memories, as this photo did for me of New Zealand women of 1950s and 1960s knitting garments for all the family, especially my mum’’. This mural is made from an old curtain sourced from a Salvation Army shop, while the accompanying doll is a Kader doll from the 1950s dressed in knitting found in local Kaiapoi charity shops. It’s like it’s that part of New Zealand’s history that we feel it’s not history because it’s not that long ago ­ it doesn’t go back centuries. ‘‘But as the song from ‘The Mill is Kaiapoi’ goes: ‘People come, people go, they love and fight and live and grow’.’’ The exhibition featuring six unique handmade story murals from ‘‘Handmade Histories’’ will be open until the end of February. Other planned exhibitions this year include a photography display, ceramics and children’s art.

She says it is a voluntary position, but ‘‘it’s pretty rewarding and the kids doing it really enjoy it’’. ‘‘We need someone to take over my role. It’s about looking after the cadets. It’s like Scouts or Girl Guides ­ the cadets are children from ages 8 to 17 and they learn about service and do badge work with a first aid focus,’’ Lisa says.

While the group has been meeting on Monday evenings from 4pm to 5.30pm, she says the evening and timing is flexible. ‘‘The hour and a half gives us time to do badge work, drills and marching, which the young people really enjoy doing.’’ Lisa has led the youth division for seven years, but her work commitments as head of marketing for Whale Watch means she will be out of town regularly during the year. She says she will around to support a new leader in getting started next month, but will be away for most of March. ‘‘The area committee is very supportive and St John can help cover the costs of attending training. It is a good opportunity for someone to give back into the community.’’

Summer dry stress Rural Women New Zealand is concerned for the mental well­ being of farmers as they struggle with the dry summer. ‘‘However, the overriding concern for Rural Women is women, who are often at the sharp end when mental illness strikes,’’ says president Wendy McGowan. ‘‘While they are seen as carers and nurturers they are not immune to stress and depression, but are most likely to put their own mental

wellbeing on hold and ‘keep calm and carry on’.’’ She says it is well recognised that family violence spikes after an adverse event with increased reports continuing for up to two years following the event. Rural women are especially vulnerable, given their distance from neighbours, health care, child care, family, friends and services. The insidiousness of a dry summer when there is no end in sight further compounds the problem.

Entries up for ewe fair By AMANDA BOWES While ewe numbers are up by 4000 at the 2015 Hawarden Ewe Fair, dry conditions are not a factor, says Rural Livestock agent Kevin Rowe. A total of 24,000 ewes will go under the hammer at the two day sale, with 12,000 strong wool ewes expected on January 27 and 12,000 fine wool on January 30. After the last ewe has been sold, there will be a ram sale. ‘‘The dry is not an issue,’’says Kevin. ‘‘We are just having a typical Canterbury summer like we used to have four or five years ago.’’ He thinks the media are over reacting a bit to the summer dry and says conditions are not really at a point where it could be described as a drought. Unlike last year where several farmers were selling capital stock due to either a change in farming practice or as the result of selling their properties, the sale this year will be more typical with annual draft ewes being presented and excess younger ewes. Traditionally the Hawarden Ewe Fair experiences hot temperatures and while last year the summer had been relatively cool, this year stock and people have become more hardened to the high temperatures which have prevailed. Whether buying, selling or just perusing, the ewe fair provides great entertainment as the auctioneers work their magic on the buyers of the thousands of sheep at a pace that can sometimes be hard to keep up with. For a country that has seen sheep farms decline with the increase in dairy, the Hawarden Ewe Fair is

probably one of the country’s few iconic sales to still take place and it remains the largest in Canterbury. Sheep are expected from far and wide, says Kevin, with the bulk from North Canterbury and Marlborough and as usual buyers can expect some quality lines up for grabs. Both sales start at 11am at the Hawarden Sale Yards, which will give prospective buyers plenty of time to look over what is on offer this year.

Farmers and environmentalists support a return to a democratically­elected Environment Canterbury (ECan). Federated Farmers North Canterbury president Lynda Murchison, of Waipara, and last year’s Green Party Waimakariri candidate Reuben Hunt, of Oxford, both believe restoring elected councillors is a priority in the Government’s ECan review. Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith and Associate Local Government Minister Louise Upston announced in December the Government’s intention for public discussion on the future of ECan to be held this year, with the intention of having a new structure in place in time for the 2016 local body elections. While Federated Farmers does not have an official policy position on the future of ECan, Mrs Murchison says she believes restoring democracy is a priority. ‘‘I think everyone would like it returned to democracy. It’s the old philosophy of no taxation without representation, but there are different views of what sort of

Young farmer contest action Young farmers are gearing up for New Zealand’s ultimate rural challenge. The ANZ Young Farmer Contest’s Tasman region final will be held at Kirwee on Saturday, March 14, with Hurunui YFC member James Hoban and Nathan Broerse, of Amuri YFC, representing North Canterbury. The contest’s seven regional finals will be held during February, March and April, with 56 competitors vying for one of seven places in the grand final at Taupo during July 2­4. Now into its 47th year, the iconic contest displays the finest of New Zealand Young Farmers in a range of action­packed challenges. Towards the end of last year more than 250 young farmers battled it out across 22 district finals, including North Canterbury. ‘‘The Young Farmer Contest is unique in the world for its national reach and breadth of competition,’’ New Zealand Young Farmers chief executive Terry Copeland says. ‘‘It’s a chance for the wider New Zealand community to see first­hand the specialist knowledge and skills that our future rural leaders possess. It is a showcase for the cream of New Zealand’s up and coming agri­sector talent.’’ Regional finalists show their skills across a range of tasks in the practical day challenges and evening show rounds as they vie for a slice of the total $271,000 contest prize pool. A Lincoln University scientist is thinking small to help solve a big problem ­ climate change. Dr Sally Price, a senior researcher in the faculty of agriculture and life sciences, is looking to raise funds so she can develop a set of guidelines for farmers to encourage the growth of naturally occurring methane­consuming soil microbes, called methanotrophs. Methane is expelled by cows and other ruminant livestock through flatulence, and is a potent greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change. She has been doing research over the last 15 years into the role the microbes play, and has found the root systems of trees and shrubs help to break up the soil and allow the methane to travel down to the microbes. Minimising compaction of the soil and incorporating organic residues can also make a difference to the microbial communities and increase methane consumption. ‘‘The good news is that most soils can act as ‘sinks’ for methane but the ability to do this ranges from 5 to 15 per cent of their potential in dairy, ungrazed pasture, sheep pasture, and cropping soils, to between 30% and 50% in shrubland and pine forest,’’ Dr Price says. She says the working of the animal’s digestive processes is not well enough understood to stop methane production so the focus has to be on other measures. Climate change is a reality and the guidelines will help farmers do their bit, but also has benefits for them as well. ‘‘Many factors influence the effectiveness of soil methane bacteria, with the soil water content, aeration and disturbance being the greatest variables.’’ She says these factors are also vital to the maintenance of soil health, so following the guidelines in order to encourage microbe growth and methane
